American Heart Month Patient Testimonial – JR Runyon

What began as an ordinary weekend took an unexpected turn for JR Runyon. Overwhelmed by extreme fatigue, his day-to-day activities became significantly more challenging, each task requiring more time and effort. After enduring multiple episodes of physical exhaustion and persistent breaks over several days, JR finally realized it was time to consult his primary care provider.

Although JR's EKG and chest x-ray appeared normal, his persistent fatigue raised concerns. His primary care provider recommended consulting a cardiologist, prompting JR to choose Dr. Steely at Conway Regional.

After JR's doctor contacted Dr. Steely, JR was prompted to go directly to the hospital because, according to Dr. Steely, based on his symptoms, his chance of having a heart attack was high.

Admitted to the hospital, JR underwent an arteriogram with the possibility of receiving a stent placement. To his surprise, Dr. Steely told him that he would instead need triple bypass surgery. JR presented with 95% blockage in his widow maker during surgery.

After surgery, JR experienced a profound sense of community through the numerous visitors and caring staff from various departments who checked on him while he was recovering from his triple bypass.

One particularly uplifting moment occurred when the cardiac rehab  team visited JR in the Critical Care Unit, outlining a comprehensive plan for his rehabilitation that extended beyond his hospital stay. The continuous care provided a strong support system during JR's challenging recovery.

JR said, "From my primary care provider's office to my nurses, Dr. Steely, and my triple bypass team, it was evident that there was a commitment to my well-being."

Starting cardiac rehab immediately after release, JR vividly remembers the initial difficulty of walking across the rehab floor. However, with the dedicated assistance of therapists, he triumphed over setbacks related to diabetes and incision healing, successfully getting back on his feet.

Reflecting on his journey, JR expressed gratitude for the excellent quality of care, emphasizing the compassion from Conway Regional staff that surpassed his expectations. Acknowledging that recovery from heart disease is an ongoing process, JR looks forward to continuing his journey with Script to Fit at the Conway Regional Health & Fitness Center. This program, focusing on exercise and behavior modification, plays a crucial role in managing chronic health conditions.

In offering advice to others, JR states, “It is important to listen to your body, accept your provider's direction, and pay attention to when your loved ones raise concern. I hope to inspire others to prioritize their health and seek timely medical attention when needed.”
